MICHAEL ELEY

Michael’s been doing yoga longer and more consistently than pretty much anything else in his life. He recognizes that yoga means a lot of different things to a lot of different people and that yoga postures are just the surface; they provide an entry point into something multi-dimensional, a living philosophy which is continuously adapting and evolving to the needs of the time. He believes that the yoga tradition can provide important lessons which are highly pertinent to our times, and at the same time grounds his teaching in a modern understanding of anatomy, physiology and the science of movement. He first started practicing yoga in 2001, and when he started out, yoga wasn’t nearly as widespread or as popular as it is now. There was only one Bikram Yoga studio in London, which is what and where he started practicing.

Later, after living and working in China for several years, he attended the Bikram Yoga teacher training in 2009, and instead of returning back to China, moved back to London and started teaching yoga. He hasn’t stopped since. He has spent a long time learning the roots of the Bishnu Ghosh tradition through the classic 84 posture Bikram Yoga “advanced” class, studied traditional Hatha and Vinyasa Yoga with Dev Kapil, and has completed a 500 hour training in dynamic vinyasa with Stewart Gilchrist. Michael believes that the experience of yoga is available for everyone, regardless of the style practised or the physical capabilities of the student. He is a Senior Yoga Teacher registered with Yoga Alliance.
